English Department Mission Statement:

     To create a community of lifelong learners who communicate effectively for a variety of purposes, demonstrate the ability to read and comprehend a variety of texts, and appreciate the complexities and richness of the human experience as reflected through literature and writing.  The junior high English curriculum is designed to increase knowledge of language arts, to inspire passionate and thoughtful readers and writers, and to facilitate a seamless transition into high school.

Class details and information

7th Grade-This course provides the foundation for all skills in secondary English classes and emphasizes basic grammar, language mechanics, vocabulary development, paragraph and essay writing, and reading both for content and pleasure.  Special focus is given to active reading of informationally dense text, analysis and comprehension of such text, and incorporating said information into expository analysis.  Persuasive and narrative writing styles will also be introduced.

An introduction to literary terminology is applied to the study of short stories, poetry, novels, and mythology.  Some basic speeches and an introduction to the research paper are included as well.

8th Grade- This course emphasizes basic grammar, language mechanics, vocabulary development, paragraph and essay writing, and critical reading.  Special focus is given to active reading of informationally dense text, analysis and comprehension of such text, and incorporating said information into expository and persuasive analysis. Writing in the narrative style will also be reinforced. 

Students will review and apply literary terminology to the study of short stories, poetry, novels, and independent analysis.  Some basic speeches and an introduction to the research paper are included as well.

Honors English - 8th Grade This course features rigorous study that challenges abilities and stimulates interests in all areas of language arts.  Honors English focuses on literary analysis with extensive writing including a high school level research paper.  Grammar is fast-paced and more intensive than regular English class.  Informational handouts and enrollment packets will be shared in the spring semester before eighth grade registration.
